The story behind the storyteller.
Aleah Kamerman — CreComm grad, PR specialist.
I’m often laughing, and usually it’s at my own joke. Humour is my favourite tool to capture a room or encourage a team. I learned it from my older brothers, who toughened me up with their teasing.
My love for writing began with journal entries as a teenager. I’d push aside the not-dirty-enough-for-the-hamper clothes from my desk chair, sit, and write. It was a cathartic release during my coming-of-age moments. Some were funny, some were heartbreaking. Most of them included a joke, because even the grim topics in life are more balanced with a little irony.
It was when I began recording these thoughts digitally that I started expanding beyond my feelings and into storytelling. I would read over entries and copy edit the adjectives until I found the best descriptions. Sometimes I’d be so giddy about how these stories turned out, I’d share the entries with friends so they could also save the memory they helped shape.
That excitement is how I know humans are at the centre of all my best writing.
Writing is how I’ve tended to some of my closest relationships. Birthday cards, love letters, thank-you notes and apologies — these are the real-life items that I know shaped my ability to make an audience cry, laugh, and remember exactly what I needed them to know.
This combination of empathy and rhetoric, as well as my instinct to lead and encourage teams, helps me excel in my communications work. I transfer these social skills into my strategy, copy, and public relations. I can present challenging subjects with clarity, I can tell important stories with conviction, and I can satisfy angry mobs with empathetic explanations.
